The Virus As An Opportunity to Overcome Alienation and Become My True Self

Let me  take the previous post and with it David Brooks and Walker Percy a step closer to what I think is really going on. If God is a triple reality of Person, Father, Son and Spirit each of Whom is out of Self as Gift to the Other, and we are made in their image, then if I name Jesus the “Son,” I am exercising myself  as “I” by “throwing” His name –  “Jesus” – at Him, and I am becoming “like” Him. And since Jesus is “Son” (and therefore His “To Be” consists in His “throwing” the name “ABBA” at the Father, I become “like” Jesus, and therefore “Son” and therefore son of the Father too.

Therefore, when Jesus prayer alone to the Father and his disciples were with Him, they were relations as He was. And then, in that context, He asked them, “Who do men say that I am?” They answered: “John the Baptist, Jeremiah, Elias, one of the prophets.”  Wrong!! And then, He asked, and  “Who do you say that I am?” “You” who are with Me and relating to the Father as I relate [ i.e. by praying’]? Simon answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Right! and how did Simon know this? Christ explains revealing: “Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I say to you. you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church. And the Gates of Hell…

To pray is to master and subdue the self such as to “own” the self, and therefore be able to give away what only I can give: myself. And this subduing and mastering self takes place minute by minute when ever I live a free act. Notice that when Jesus calls Simon “Peter” (Rock) He was revealing that Simon had been transformed into “Rock” as Christ revealed Himself to be  “Stone,” Cornerstone.

  • Psalm 118:22-23
The stone which the builders rejected
    Has become the chief cornerstone.
    This was the LORD’s doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
  • Isaiah 28:16
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:
“ Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation,
    A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
Whoever believes will not act hastily.
  • Matthew 21:42-44
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
‘ The stone which the builders rejected
    Has become the chief cornerstone.
    This was the LORD’s doing,
And it is marvelous in our eyes’? “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

  • 1 Corinthians 3:9-12
For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,

  • 1 Peter 2:6-8
Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,
    “Behold, I lay in Zion
    A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient,
“The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone,” and
    “A stone of stumbling
And a rock of offense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

  • Isaiah 8:14
He will be as a sanctuary,
But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
  • Daniel 2:34-35
You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

  • Daniel 2:44-45
And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold&emdash;the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.”

  • Luke 6:49
But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”
  • Acts 4:11
This is the “stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.”
  • Romans 9:33
    As it is written:
‘ Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense,
And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.’

  • 1 Peter 2:4
Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,

Therefore, by the struggle to live in the moment, subdue ourselves such that we  take possession of ourselves – which is precisely the use of my freedom to determine myself and not be determined by another,  I become who I truly am and overcome the alienation of not being me, “I,” myself. In a word, the topic of alienation where we are ground down to being only objects of every determining force is overcome only in view of making the gift of oneself to the creating God Who became man and not only gave us His Law: (Love God and the others as I Love) but told us: “Follow Me.!” “Live My Life”
